The Ethical Dilemma of Using AI for Writing: Why You Should Still Do It

This is the first part of a series focusing on the use of AI generation for everyday users. Although there will be misuses of any technology or work market, this article takes the point of individuals and their everyday job.

The Controversy

The use of AI in content creation is a hot-button issue, and it’s not going away anytime soon. Critics argue that it poses a threat to professional writers, artists, and other business professionals. But the reality is a little more nuanced.

Empowering, Not Replacing

Even though the potential for misuse is high, the technology is here and we need to adapt to it. ChatGPT isn’t here to steal jobs from writers; it’s here to empower individuals to express themselves more effectively. For professionals like me, who are swamped with work and need to document and structure information regularly, ChatGPT is a godsend.

The Cost Factor

Hiring a professional writer is an option for anyone, in theory, but that can be said about any task or labor. Not only is it expensive, but the writer must also fully grasp your perspective to articulate your thoughts accurately. For many, the cost and complexity make this option untenable. We haven’t hired professionals for everyday writing, and we won’t be doing it going forward either.

The Utility of ChatGPT

ChatGPT fills a gap by enabling people to produce more content in less time, without compromising on quality. It’s not about eliminating jobs; it’s about enhancing productivity where hiring additional help is impractical. For instance, I wouldn’t normally hire a writer to maintain my blog, but I still need to share my expertise. ChatGPT allows me to do just that.

Transparency and Accountability

As we embrace this technology, there’s a need for transparency. Perhaps a new badge is in order—to indicate that AI was involved in the writing process. This would acknowledge that while the text may not be entirely original, the ideas and thoughts behind it are.

Conclusion

ChatGPT is a tool that can be used responsibly to benefit a wide range of people. While it does pose some ethical questions, its utility in helping individuals share their knowledge and insights cannot be ignored. And hey, it even serves as a great debating partner—but that’s a topic for another article.
